Fascia: The Living Matrix Beneath the Skin
Fascia is often described as connective tissue — the web that wraps muscles and organs. But this description barely touches the depth of what it is.
Fascia is a living, responsive network that permeates the entire body. It interfaces with circulation, influences immune signalling, communicates with the nervous system and adapts continually to the stresses, movements and experiences of our lives.
This intricate matrix is largely composed of water — a gel-like, fluid environment that allows tissues to glide, transmit force and sense change. The body itself is over 70% water, and within fascia that water forms an intelligent medium through which the body listens, adapts and remembers.
Does water have memory?
Over time, our experiences leave impressions. Repeated movements, injuries, posture, stress, emotional states — all shape the tone and organisation of the fascial network. What the body cannot fully process can remain held within this tissue as subtle patterns of tension or restriction.
This is why touch, movement and bodywork can be so powerful.
When we work with fascia we are not simply working with muscles. We are engaging with the body’s communication network — inviting fluidity where there has been holding, restoring glide where there has been stagnation, and creating space for the nervous system to recalibrate.
The body remembers. But it also has an extraordinary capacity to reorganise, soften and renew when given the right conditions.
